Brigitte Gasser is an Associate Professor for “Microbial Systems Biotechnology” at BOKU University (Vienna, Austria) and Head of the Area “Sustainable Production” at the Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology (ACIB). She obtained her habilitation in “Yeast Molecular Biotechnology” in 2013 and her PhD in Biotechnology in 2007. Her research focusses on the comprehensive understanding of protein folding and secretion in the yeast Pichia pastoris (syn Komagataella phaffii), and on the design and development of improved cell factories and sustainable processes using systems and synthetic biology. From 2017-2024, she was Head of the Christian Doppler Laboratory for growth-decoupled protein production in yeast, where she and her team investigated the cellular responses of K. phaffii during adaptation to extremely slow growth rates. Combining innovative cell and promoter engineering strategies with in vivo biosensors successfully enhanced the secretion of industrially relevant recombinant proteins. In this field, Brigitte Gasser has published more than 102 papers, is inventor of 20 patent families, and received several prizes. She is editorial board member of Yeast, FEMS Yeast Research, and Microbial Cell Factories, and Commissioner at the International Yeast Commission ICY.
