Jean-Marc Nicaud, former research director at INRAE, Jouy-en-Josas, was leading the “BIMLip” group. He is an expert on the oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica, an industrial chassis - from recombinant protein to lipid derivative production. Currently consultant for academic and industrial labs. The depletion of "fossil fuels" and "food for all" are among the major concerns of our time. In this context, the search for renewable energy and alternatives to petrochemicals without competing with food is becoming a priority. The use of microorganisms such as yeast for the production of biofuels (bio-lipids) and high value-added lipid derivatives from renewable resources is indeed promising.

The BIMLip team "Integrative Biology of Lipid Metabolism" undertakes a fundamental approach to systemic biology and genetic engineering of the lipid metabolism of oleaginous yeasts, in particular Yarrowia lipolytica. The team was exploiting the knowledge gained for applications in biofuels, biolipids, bioplastics and for white chemistry. Jean-Marc Nicaud’s team has also developed new industrial chassis strains and patented strong hybrid-erythritol-inducible promoters for the commercial production of enzymes for biotechnological and medical applications.
